Mugs1

This project was my first experience in turning these Travel Mugs offered in a kit by Woodcraft.  This is a relatively new kit with a screw top lid.  In our online ad, it states, “Create a custom travel mug using your favorite wood or mixed media to produce a one-of-a-kind dramatic effect.  You can either turn the outer liner using a stave configuration or simply use solid wood blocks.  Although this kit is for an experienced turner, you will find that the hollowing techniques are easy to execute, and the results are nothing short of amazing.

    Travel Mug

I've made a number of these and the results were 'beautiful' - as stated by the recipients. The one I kept for myself does not seal well and leaks when drinking from the mug. I wonder if there is a replacement seal that could be offered to resolve this issue.? ? ?

    Cheap

I got this for a Christmas present. I had a great time turning the outer shell but the quality of the wood was 100 times greater than the lid. Save your money and buy a cheap travel mug somewhere else, recycle the outer portion and turn a new one. I know it is a waste but is cheaper and you get a better product.

16 oz stainless steel travel mug leaks!

Beautiful idea, but the contents inside drip when lid is secured and closed!

great for gifts and craft shows

I have made at least two dozen of these travel mugs. I have done them with staves and in segmented form. They sell out quickly and I have returning customers. They are a great project.

    These are junk

I bought five of these for a business associate to give to clients after I added the turned wood, from a prized stock of really nice curly maple. Each one was returned because the lids don't stay on. They work for the first few days, then get loose and won't lock on. Catastrophic failure and spills are a certainty. Not just one, not just two, not three, not four...ALL of five that I bought failed. The pressure fit lids were far better.
