Continuing our woodworking adventures into Alabama, we arrive at the home of Woodcraft Magazine senior editor, Joe Hurst-Wajszczuk to cover his 20′ x 22′ interior garage space morphing into an extreme workshop makeover. The 2011 October/ November Issue #43 of Woodcraft Magazine features a special topic on this floor to ceiling, wall to wall transformation with detailed projects, providing instruction on turning any garage, basement or outside structure into a viable workshop. Joe is tasked with converting his 20′ x 20′ two-car attached garage into an organized, fully functioning, safe workshop. The “BEFORE” photo below will give you an idea of what Joe started with.  If the clutter and disorganization looks similar to your work area, then perhaps this information may help you build a workshop makeover too.

We asked woodworker Dave Clarke, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2018, to take a look at an article Woodcraft Magazine published in Issue 44 by Pete Stephano – “The Wheelchair Woodworker Shop” – to see if he felt that the recommendations were still relevant and if he had any other advice for folks wanting to set up a workshop with modifications. Not Recommended

Red "tire" failed coming off in pieces - only one of four failed, so don't think that it was overloaded

used on heavy mobile blacksmith forge

I built a 2" X 6" wood frame for a large old cast iron blacksmith forge, and its cast iron blower, and needed to replace 3" casters which were too low. The 5" ones work nicely as I winch the forge up a ramp onto my trailer to go demonstrate blacksmithing at other sites, often rough ground. No effects from exposure to rain and sun, heat or cold. Brakes hold well while trailering. 2 casters used with 2 of the 5" non-caster wheels, so the rig doesn't go sidewise on side slopes. Very satisfied.

    best casters I've used

All of my work stations are on these casters. They are smooth and make moving my stations around easy.

    Durable and good looking

I've been using this type of castor in the workshop for awhile and haven't been disappointed. Recently, I built a large heavy duty potting bench that could be moved around. These castors were just the right match with a 5" clearance and a load rating of 300 lbs per wheel. I also like the red rubber wheels as they are easy to see.

    Short life span!

These casters were great the first 2 years, but then the red layer began to crack and then fell apart. Now you can no longer lock the wheels because the black inner tire is too small for the brake to touch. For the price, I expected longer service. I won't be buying any more.

    Hard to unlock

The locking mechanism is the same size on the 3", 4", and 5" wheels. The smaller sizes are very easy to unlock. The largest diameter wheel crowds the locking/unlocking tabs which makes them harder to unlock. The taller wheels though will climb over rough or bumpy surfaces more easily. In any size though these are better wheels than other brands I have in my shop.
