Northern white ash from Pennsylvania and upstate New York is recognized as the best material for making baseball bats. Throughout the years, baseball bats have been made from many types of wood, including ash, oak, maple and hickory. However, as years went by players found that bats made of ash would hit the ball best. Ash makes a medium-weight bat which allows a batter to swing at the advancing ball quickly. Graded for quality with straight grain being the most important criteria, these billets are suitable for college and all lower levels of play. Billets measure 2- 7/8" in diameter and 37" in length, and, because they have been vacuum-dried to a moisture content of 9-11%, they offer superior strength.
Ash (Fraxinus americana) has a light brown heartwood with almost all white sapwood. The wood has straight, coarse, open-pored grain of even texture. Ash can be worked effectively with sharp hand tools and power tools with carbide cutters. Common uses for Ash include cabinets, chairs, flooring, food containers, tool handles and sporting implements. Ash is the preferred material for hockey sticks, polo mallets, traditional snowshoes, and the bats used in major league baseball.

Ash

You may never have worked ash in the shop, but you’re sure to have had contact with the wood at some time—it’s the traditional material for the handles of hoes, rakes, shovels, and most other non-striking tools.

    Ash Billets

My teenage son is on a high school baseball team in Middle Tennessee. He is currently learning how to turn as a hobby, and instinctively started turning bats. These billets are making a really decent bat, and he is selling them as faster than he can make them. They seem to withstand continuous cage use at this point, and the team is eager to get them out for their wood bat tournaments.

    Totally Satisfied

I have purchased 3 of these billets and turned them down for gifts to my family. They were all very happy to get them as they are a baseball family. I personalized the burn label for each of them. All are being used extensively and holding up very well.
