Description: This is a great way to learn about turning wood on a Lathe. Before you buy a Lathe, you can learn about how to safely use it and the tools and accessories needed to make a ballpoint or Rolling Ball pen and also pencils! Once you gain this experience, it opens up the opportunity to take a number of other turning classes we offer. Turning items on the Lathe will allow you to make items for yourself as well as distinctive and beautiful gifts for friends and family. Description: In this class you will learn the basics and science of stabilizing wood and resin casting a turning blank. Instructor Nickolas Knue, will show you all the steps and processes of stabilizing/dying a wooden turning blank and also show you the steps and processes of casting a wooden turning blank with colored resin. Nickolas will show you how to make a punky piece of wood into a work of art that can then be turned into something even more incredible by you on a lathe. You will receive two blanks at the end of the whole process. One blank will be a stabilized/dyed turning blank and the other blank will be a hybrid blank of wood and resin. The class will take place in the evening and the following day you will be able to pick up your blanks due to the casting and stabilizing process taking place over night.

Description: This class is a great way to learn to make your own crushed stone or opal inlay rings, using the lathe to help with the process. Students must provide ring size when signing up for class so we can get it (if we have to order your size, make sure to allow time to come in!) The instructor will bring several colors of inlay materials to choose from, to make your ring unique! Each student will come away with some familiarity with using a mandrill and bushings on a lathe, as well as some basic jewelry inlay techniques, not to mention their own beautiful ring, and the knowledge to make more!

Description: This new expanded hands on class is for entry and advanced sharpening of Bench Tools such as Plane, Chisel and Spoke Shave Irons, as well as, Scrapers and also easy Kitchen Knife Sharpening will be covered. Alan Wolf, our hand tool expert, will focus on the use of Diamond Plates and the Strop, but will discuss other methods like using wet/dry sandpaper and water/oil stones along with when to use grinders or sanders. He will explain the various types of steel and how they may effect your sharpening and use of your tools, as well as, how to match the correct angle to the material with and without various jigs you will be able to use in the class. Bring your dull irons to class and bring them home sharp with the knowledge on how to keep them sharp! There will be a ten percent (10%) discount for items used during the class the day of the class.

You will learn the terminology and the techniques focused on many of the specialized processes to complete your own personalized instrument. The process is broken down into small steps to familiarize the student with the construction of the neck including truss rod installation, fingerboard and fretting, abalone inlay and construction of the body including brace trimming/fitting, top installation, bridge gluing/alignment, purfling and final fit up to the neck to body joint using a bolt-on system. Bamboo Backed Long Bow Building Class with Keith Grzelak

Class Size: 4-8
Description: Keith Grzelak, owner of Build Wood Bows, LLC, has been making bows for a decade and learned most of what he knows from Master Bowyer Tom Turgeon. In this two day class, you'll learn how to take a glued up Bamboo/hardwood stave and turn it into a functional bow you will be proud to take target shooting or hunting! Using a rasp, you will learn how to adjust the limbs to account for the difference in the strength of the draw, and either build a stiffer bow with more of a hunting weight type of action, or more flexibility for someone who needs a lighter weight bow. Either way, you will understand how to build a bow on your own in the future. Once it gets close, you will learn how to string the bow and you will actually shoot it! Finally, you will dye the bow with trans-tint, and apply your first coat of finish before you leave. This class isn't just for guys and it isn't just for woodworkers, either!

Building An Electric Guitar with Ed Panzer

Description: This is a great opportunity to make a Tele-Type Guitar for yourself or give the class as a gift for someone that loves to play guitars! This class is designed to accommodate the beginner/intermediate woodworker in building their own electric guitar learning basic woodworking techniques in the process. The process will be broken down in bite sized tasks that enable the student to get a clear understanding of the various steps in making an electric guitar. This is not a kit guitar! You are building it from scratch! You will learn how to make a body, hand carve a neck, install a truss rod and install the fret board after you install frets and slot a nut. Finally, you will learn how to wire it up (CTS Pots and Switchcraft Output Jack) and to properly setup a guitar to play perfectly for you. Description: This new expanded hands on class is for entry and advanced sharpening of Bench Tools such as Plane, Chisel and Spoke Shave Irons, as well as, Scrapers and also easy Kitchen Knife Sharpening will be covered. Alan Wolf, our hand tool expert, will focus on the use of Diamond Plates and the Strop, but will discuss other methods like using wet/dry sandpaper and water/oil stones along with when to use grinders or sanders. He will explain the various types of steel and how they may effect your sharpening and use of your tools, as well as, how to match the correct angle to the material with and without various jigs you will be able to use in the class. Bring your dull irons to class and bring them home sharp with the knowledge on how to keep them sharp! There will be a ten percent (10%) discount for items used during the class the day of the class.

Description: Learn to dimension a piece of rough-cut timber into a usable board, using only hand tools! “Dimensioning” involves flattening, squaring, and bringing the board to specific dimensions (especially thickness and width) needed for a project. You’ll learn common face & edge marking, squaring, sawing, and hand-plane techniques, using a scrub plane, smoothing plane, hand saws, marking and thickness gauges, and squares. Students must be able to stand at a bench through the class, and must be at least 14 years of age (minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian). Description: With more than 64 species of wood in Ohio, woodworkers have a great opportunity to salvage and use wood from local blown down and dead trees. Join tree farmer Randy Sanders to learn how he turns blowdown and dead trees into slabs, flitches, picture frames, benches and other one of a kind products. Using a power point presentation and wood examples, Randy will discuss the process and show what equipment is needed to log, mill and dry the wood and work with slabs and flitches. Learn how to have a log milled to produce flat sawn, quarter sawn and book matched flitches, or edged lumber. Also learn about the unique and beautiful wood from native and rarely used trees like redbud, black locust, persimmon and sassafras and how to find a sawmill. Benefits from salvaging wood from local dead trees include - lower costs, controlling if chemicals are used in the process, specialized cuts, and beautiful one-of-a-kind final products. The class will consist of approximately 3 hours of slides and 1 hour of Randy talking and showing how he makes products out of the slabs and flitches.

Description: Ohio woodworkers, builders and others are fortunate to live in a state with such an abundance and diversity of tree species. Join tree farmer, sawyer and woodworker Randy Sanders to learn more about Ohio's hardwoods and softwoods. He has logged, milled, dried and worked with more than 35 species during the past 12 years. Using PowerPoint presentations, handouts and wood samples, he will discuss the basic properties, structures and uses of these woods. More than 30 species of Ohio wood will be viewed and discussed. Randy will show the different ways lumber and flitches are cut from logs as well as common defects and anomalies such as spalting, burls and black knot disease. Students will gain a better understanding of common wood terms including grain (straight, spiral, edge, top, end), figure, ray flecking, ring-porous, and others that will help you begin the process of wood identification and better understand what you see looking at wood. All will leave with two wood samples (one each of ring-porous and diffuse porous).

Description: This is a great opportunity to make a Tele-Type Guitar for yourself or give the class as a gift for someone that loves to play guitars! This class is designed to accommodate the beginner/intermediate woodworker in building their own electric guitar learning basic woodworking techniques in the process. The process will be broken down in bite sized tasks that enable the student to get a clear understanding of the various steps in making an electric guitar. This is not a kit guitar! You are building it from scratch! You will learn how to make a body, hand carve a neck, install a truss rod and install the fret board after you install frets and slot a nut. Finally, you will learn how to wire it up (CTS Pots and Switchcraft Output Jack) and to properly setup a guitar to play perfectly for you.
