Behind every great workshop lies a great plan, whether your shop makes up the corner of a basement, the back wall of a two-car garage, or a dedicated outbuilding. Common ingredients include good organization, a complement of tools (power and hand) geared to your interests, and a practical, efficient floor plan. Other considerations are dust collection, accessibility, heating, lighting, and electrical service.

    Collect dust but....

It does collect the saw dust but ... 1. Direction indicates to bolt to shop vac. Why to empty you have to unbolt from the shop vac. 2. Hose is short and inflexible. Be prepare to purchase a more flexible and longer hose to use with hand tools. 3. Do not put the wheels on the 5 gal bucket. The wheels make the bucket unstable. 4. Plastic elbow is okay but needs a tighter fit. It does collect dust but needs a better and longer hose.

System works, hose and adaptors are poor

The vortex system works great! It even separates the fine dust particles from sanding with an RO sander. I've used it with everything from planers to sanders with great success. However, get ready to do some thinking when it comes to the hoses and fittings. They're terrible! The system was not designed to be used with the fairly common 2-1/2" hose fittings and it struggles (at best) to get along with 1-1/2" hoses. The fittings they have included pop out on a fairly regular basis which completely stops all dust collection. After buying this, I would recommend just getting the DIY dust deputy 149952 and building the rest of the kit yourself. 3 stars because the dust deputy works so well but the rest of the kit is a lesson in frustration. It's as if they designed this great devise and then went to a third party for all the parts. They "almost" work.

    As good as advertised!

Bought today and hooked up this evening. All I can say is this thing is as good as advertised. I originally didn’t connect it to my vacuum with the bolts and foam. After using it a bit it tends to fall over a good bit. Once I mounted it to the vacuum it’s rigidly in place and moves easily. Almost nothing is getting into the main vacuum and suction stays very high!

    Great product that really works

The Dust Deputy was reviewed on an episode of the Wood Whisperer and I was impressed enough to try it out. This last weekend I began my first real project as a woodworker and was absolutely amazed at how well kept the sawdust out of my Shop Vac. After an entire day of sawing, there was almost no sawdust in my Shop Vac and the Dust Deputy was 1/4 full. Amazing! The hookups can be a little challenging to figure out as I chose not to drill into my Shop Vac or install the casters that came with the kit. I plan on making a cart for both in the near future. But I am still rating this at 5 stars!

    excellent cyclone horrible quality control

works great in the woodshop and collecting drywall and mud dust (hung 50 sheets in the wood shop). it collected 75% of the mud dust which is one of the nastiest things to vacuum. the bad: the outlet to the vacuum shattered at its base iwthin the 1st month of use. have held it together for a year with ducktape and epoxy.

    Missing Hardware

This does work well at capturing most of the sawdust prior to reaching my shop vacuum. The reason for the two stars are lack of quality control and customer service. When I opened the box, most of the mounting hardware was missing. Since I wanted to use this right away, I just purchased the needed hardware. My local Woodcraft would surely have exchanged it, but they did nothing wrong and there is the inconvenience of driving back to the store. I did register this at the Oneida website and left poor marks on the warranty survey. Additionally I entered comments as to exactly what was wrong. They must not review any of the warranty registrations as I heard nothing from Oneida. Then I called their customer service line and received no answer. Finally, I sent an email to their customer service and again received no reply. In the end I was able to make a functioning cyclone. This purchase was made after reviewing and reading many reviews of different cyclones. I was able to deal with the missing hardware, but not the lack of customer service. This will be my last purchase of any Oneida products.

    Works Great, unstable with wheels

I use the Dust Deputy with a wall mounted shop-vac. The Dust Deputy is free standing on the floor beneath the vac. With the wheels attached exactly as per instructions, the Dust Deputy attached to the buckets is highly unstable an easily falls over. This is primarily because of the heavy, mostly inflexible hose connecting the shop-vac to the Dust Deputy. I must use it without the wheels and sitting flat on the floor which means I have ruined the second bucket by drilling holes in it. It does work superbly in collecting dust & wood chips exactly as advertised.

Modify It - Then It Works As Intended

To begin, nothing negative I will say here should reflect on Woodcraft. When I had a problem with this Oneida Dust Deputy Kit, even after it was out of warranty (Way too short 90 days, BTW IMHO.), Woodcraft offered to replace a faultily designed hose connector and the hose. The problem with this unit as Oneida insists it must be used, is that the supplied hose is shown in the instructions connected in a way that will not only stress the hose connector and make the collection bucket top-heavy if not attached to a shop vacuum, it makes presumptively poor use of the supplied hose, thus relegating the hose of the shop vacuum to NO use with this collection system. Assembled and installed as shown in Oneida's directions, requires you to buy a SECOND hose to complete the connection to your dust-generating tool. If you can, and most times you WILL be able to make use of your shop vacuum hose, you should use its hose to connect to the TOP of the cyclone using a supplied right-angle connector, and use Oneida's supplied hose to go from the side inlet port of the cyclone to the dust-generating tool. I have included a photo of the Oneida setup as intended by them, and a photo of my modified setup that makes efficient use of supplied components and works excellently, as intended, without putting stress on any component. Note the use of a supplied commercial elbow, able to take the stress of a slip-fit connection without splitting as the Oneida-supplied hose adapter did. It was fixed with a personally-supplied hose clamp. Note, too, that the right-angle connector used as I have, eliminates the awkward connection at the top of the cyclone that will stress ANY hose unnecessarily.

You should probably get one of these.

Had everything assembled and functional in about ten minutes, and since then can't imagine life without it (until I upgrade to a proper dust collector). It's rare to find a product that performs so well. Suction has remained good after filling several buckets, and the new shop-vac filter that I bought concurrently remains fairly clean. As an added bonus, you might find that you are able to install a higher quality filter, as clogging will be much less of an issue going forward. Performance is compelling enough that I've even hooked it up to my power planer (portable 13"). While this is clearly beyond the intended capabilities of the Oneida and my vacuum, the combo appears to have no trouble clearing chips from boards up to 6" wide. That's as far as I've gotten with that test. Like some Swedish furniture, the Oneida should last a long time if you're not too rough with it. It's all plastic, so be careful. The only con that comes to mind is the price. I'd imagine that this is a pretty high-margin product, given that there's really only a single custom part, plus a couple of buckets, a hose, and some cheap wheels. That said, I've seen it on sale, and it has made my 12 gallon shop-vac feel adequate again. For that, I am eternally thankful.

Good Dust Collector for a Shop Vac

I have waited to do a review until I had used the dust collector for a few months. I have been very impressed with the cyclone. I use it on my miter saw, bandsaw, and orbital sander. It have noticed a drastic reduction in fine sawdust. I did not attach the bucket to my shop vacuum, but will either connect it to my vacuum or build a cart that will hold both and make it easier to empty the bucket.

    Best shop addition yet.

This thing is awesome. period. It separates out almost everything dust-wise that I can suck up with my shop-vac. Almost NOTHING gets past it into the body of the vacuum. I've used it daily for the past month, and only had to clean my filter one time, just for good measure. It wasn't even that dirty, just felt like I needed to do it. It can really hog up the dust too, My band-saw doesn't have a proper dust collection attachment, but only has a large box (shoe box size) at the bottom for the dust to pool, so there's a large quantity of dust in there most of the time, all it takes is a few seconds with the shop vac to have it spotless. The only thing that can make it into the vacuum is the occasional long strip from a hand plane or piece of paper towel. Sure, you can buy the cyclone by itself, but then you gotta do the run-around to find a sealing material, hardware to attach it to your vac, casters, buckets, OR, you buy the kit and be done with it, using it in about 20 minutes. In the same vein, you could build one, BUT, again, this thing is a performer, and unless you're just into aerodynamics and tuning of cyclones, you'll never match the ability of this thing.

    Worth while purchase

I use this to vacuum up wood chips and saw dust. It really saves on shop vac filters. I did not attach it to the shop vac because it made the assembly to cumbersome to pull around the shop. So, I keep the units separate. In this mode it tipped over easily. So I mounted the bottom bucket to a 12"x12" piece of plywood and mounted four casters on the plywood. (3 are supplied) That worked fine. Great addition to the shop.

    Works exactly as advertised.

This thing works fantastically! Aside from my table saw, it's probably the best purchase I've made for my wood shop. Only a very small amount of dust (and one Styrofoam peanut) have made it past this thing. I've filled the 5 gallon bucket probably 4 times since I got it, and the amount of dust and debris that have made it to the my shop vac are almost unnoticeable; less than 1/16 inch deep in the shop vac. The only thing that I could see that would make this thing better was if it were made of a little bit thicker/stiffer plastic. Also, the lid for the buckets that come with the kit are very flimsy; but that has nothing to do with the Dust Deputy itself.

    Good Product

I am setting up a small woodworking shop and couldn't justify a large dust collection system. This unit when hooked up to a shop vac works great. It filters even the fine dust from sawing and routing and there is barely a trace that makes it to the shop vac. I even hooked the output hose from my DeWalt planer to this unit and left the exhaust on the top of the Dust Deputy open to avoid back pressure from the shop vac. (shop vac doesn't have enough pull to overcome the planer blower). The Dust Deputy collected all of the chips with no problem. I do have a complaint about the cyclone mounting on the bucket lid. The lid is so flimsy that the cyclone tilts when hoses are connected and it is only a matter of time before the lid or flange fatigues and something breaks. I made a ring out of plywood and put it on the underside of the lid, bolting the cyclone thru the lid and thru the ring with longer screws which reinforced the lid. (See attached photo). There are some videos on Youtube showing other supports people have made and I highly recommend something be added. I'm amazed Oneida has such a good collector design with such a flimsy mounting scheme.

Well worth it, easier than dumping a vac

I use the Dust Deputy as a fixed cyclone by my lathe. It saves me having to take my ShopVac apart to dump the sawdust and wood shavings. As well as having to clean the filter. I use it with the 2-1/2" Dust Source Rigid Flex Set so I can best position the nozzle during turning and sanding. Since I don't move the Dust Deputy around I didn't need to use the included hardware kit: attach casters to the 2nd bucket; then bolt the 2nd bucket to the vac. If I was going to attach the Dust Deputy to my Shop Vac then I would probably just rest the bucket on the accessory carrier and use a nylon rachet strap to hold them together.

    Does a great job

Connected to a small Rigid shop vacuum, the bucket on the Dust Deputy collects virtually all the sawdust and chips, so the filter remains clean and the suction is amazing. Wish I had installed this years ago. There are many ways to mount and attach the unit to your vacuum, and this may take some planning to end up with a convenient system, but Oneida includes casters, hardware, a second bucket and suggestions. And the suggestions are written and pictured so as not to insult the handy folk who will use this tool.

    Quick and easy cyclone

inserted cyclone on suction side of shop vac where it captures all wood chips and > 95% wood dust. Shop vac remains remarkably clean after 15 hours of use! The unit could use a less flexible lid as right now the cyclone tower can lean easily - 10-15 degrees - because of flex in lid to which cyclone is attached. Best about my order was very prompt delivery using standard shipping!

    Overall works great

This one really works. I've had other separators, that collected chips, but not dust - this one does. After I hooked it up, I sucked up all the dust on my shop floor. The 5-gal bucked was full, but almost none in my Shop-Vac, including the filter. I noticed no reduction of suction. It was gratifying hauling out a bucket of dust rather than my entire shop-vac. The only (minor) knock I have is the lid is very flimsy. Once the seperator is installed with the hose attached, it flexes quite a bit. I reinforced mine with a circular piece of 1/4" hardboard I cut for the purpose, which helped a lot. You could also use a different lid. Overall, not a big deal considering the overall good performance.

This works great with machines that produce a lot of sawdust. I use it with a special shop vac (designed for drywall contractors) because my woodturning produces a lot of very fine sawdust. Good Concept, Flawed Execution

I bought this for use cleaning up the small, oily metal clippings generated by my mill. The idea was to use my wood working dust collector for vacuum, but to catch the swarf before it could reach the collector. It worked moderately well, but there are some design issues. The port size is a little odd; 2" hose won't clamp directly over either the inlet or outlet. The plastic lid for the bucket is a little flimsy; the cyclone separator rocks around on it. The whole assembly is so light weight that moving the vacuum hoses causes it to tip over. Because the inlet/outlet ports are nominally 2", it chokes the flow from my 4" system down so much that the air flow is significantly reduced. Included in the kit are casters for making a rolling base (not shown in the Woodcraft picture).

    Good product

I saw a couple videos of this item on YouTube and it convinced me to purchase it. I have to say it does everything they claim it does. I was tired ov having to clean out my shopvac filter each time the tub was full, the cyclone solves that problem. I will say that it is suseptible to clogging. I found that hand plane shavings and small scraps/shavings of wood will clog the intake port and render it ineffective. But it is very easy to un-clog, you just have to be aware of this and watch out for it. This whole system makes clean up a breeze.

    Good system!

I got this system because I was tired of cleaning clogged saw dust and particles from my shop vac filter every time I had to empty the 5 gallon bucket. It does everything it claims. I have noticed, however, that hand plane shavings will clog the port to the cyclone tube and I suspect that the shavings that get through interfere with all the dust reaching the bucket because I do find a considerable amount of saw dust in my shop vac when I've been vacuuming up hand plane shavings.

I have noted however, that when I vacuum up shavings from my hand plane that it will tend to clog where the vac hose enters the intake port of the dust deputy and when you introduce hand plane shavings it decreases it's efficiency in separating the fine dust from my shop vac. There must be something about hand plane shavings that interupt the flow of the fine dust down in to the collection bucket. But either way, I'm not having to clean out my shop vac no where near as frequently and no more cleaning out the filter.

    Great product.....and fun too

Pro: I dump sawdust on the floor just to see the cyclone in action. Works great. Saves constant cleaning of filter to maintain maximum suction. Con: Creative cabinetry suggested to utilize the cyclone on your shop-vac. I built a cart to hold my shop-vac and cyclone as a single unit with castor's and I love it

    Not all there!

Just bought this from the Dallas store and got home and not all the items were included. From their website ad, the only item missing is the foam block. . I can work around that but reviewing the enclosed owners manual, there are several pieces missing. Hoes adaptors, (3), a bracket for mounting. Will have to check with Oneida's site for clarification. Maybe a mis-print or older manual. Since the store is a ways away, I will just have to improvise to make this up. I have not run this system yet so the performance jury is still out.

    Works As Advertised

I have a very small shop with very simple cleaning and dust-control needs. I didn't feel the need for a complete, dedicated dust removal system. The Deluxe Dust Deputy kit provided the right balance of power, size and cost. I just finished testing it, and it works just as advertised. Air flows through the system while the cyclone action traps most of the dust and shavings, which then fall into the bucket. You can actually see the crud swirling around inside! And rather than having to wrestle around trying to empty my big shop-vac, I can just pop the lid off the Dust Deputy and empty the bucket. My only minor complaints are that the hose provided with the kit is rather stiff and the hose fittings on the Deputy itself don't fit very tightly. I may replace the kit hose with a more flexible one from the home center. (Not sure if it has to be a specific length - I'll have to experiment.) A little duck tape will keep the hoses from slipping off the unit. So far, I'm very glad I purchased the Dust Deputy.

Not all its cracked up to be ...

I purchased this product to suck up dust while grinding out grout from my kitchen tiles. I found that the fine dust particles still manage to get into the filter in my shop vac. In fact I had to clean the filter every hour of use. I would say that it does a good job at keeping about 75% of the dust from entering the Shop Vac. Hopefully it will work better with sawdust. Lastly; it seems a little overpriced for what you get.

Does what it claims to do!

Use for wood lathe cleanup of chips and dust.It does work great and saves cleaning vac filter.Sales image shows lid reinforcing ring but not even extra washer include to back lid inside. I used nylon fender washer I had. It must have something for this. The hose is very ridged and had a permanent kick so hose collapse at that point. Hose end size not listed but it is 2 1/4" OD so it fit my vac just fine. Kit would be better with lid reinforcing and better hose for the $40 more you spend. Buckets are good quality though.

DOES WHAT IT IS DESIGNED TO DO

It does what it is designed to do, saves the filter, maybe 1% of the sawdust etc ends up in the shop vac. I built a cart similar to the one in shop notes 109, which is almost a must. The supplied hose is much to stiff, it will work, but I made my own. The second upgrade I made was cutting a 9 1/4" circle out of 3/4 plywood, mounted it under the lid attached to the vortex with slightly longer bolts and larger fender washers. Any pull from the hose ( which I have none with the cart) on the vortex cone and lid is now almost gone. Without this mod, it is a very weak way to mount the vortex cone to the lid. This is a great product, especially when on sale [...]. Buy it and make the mods unless Oneida decides to make them at time of manufacture.

    Not well engineered

I purchased this after reading the reviews and knew it would be a pain to move around (unless you attach it to the vacuum unit or build a stand/base). It does the job of keeping most particles out of the vacuum. However, the lids are very loose, barely staying in place on the 5 gal. buckets when no suction is applied. When I switch off the vacuum, the lids often displodge. I would not purchase again.

Worth the money for a cheap solution

Works great to keep your shop vacuum's filter clean. If pail overfills it will overflow into the the vacuum's pail. The only problem is the unit needs to be secured to prevent from tipping over. Also, depending on how the hose lays the unit will scream loudly. More of an annoyance than anything else.

    Works for most coarse dust.

It doesn't work on very fine particles. I used it to vacuum ash from my fireplace, and the majority of it ended up in vacuum's filter. It does separate sand, pet hair, saw dust etc. The price is very steep for what you get with the kit: 2 buckets, lid, screws, etc. But the metal support flange is unique and isn't sold separately. Otherwise I would have bought just the cyclone module.

    Great Vacuum Add-on

I have grown tired over the years of opening my shop vac, brushing the filter down and blasting it with compressed air, all while trying to inhale as little of the dust and dirt as possible. I used this unit for the first time this past weekend and Wow! I couldn't find ANY dust in my (brand new) vacuum filter, and that's after cutting through several sheets of MDF. Checked out the Oneida bucket and it was holding all of what my saw didn't leave on the floor. Well done engineering on Oneida's part. Mounting it to the vacuum was easy, but left a bit to be desired. Not sure if I could think of a better solution, but foam blocks squished between two circular buckets is a bit cheesy. If I really cared that much though, I would have built a cart or something. Not a big deal though. It works!!!

    Worth every cent

Works great with a Shop Vac in my wood shop. I have a dust collection system, an air cleaner and use the Shop Vac to cleanup when I am done woodworking in the shop or when using a power tool not directly attached to the dust collection system. The addition of the Dust Deputy is saving me from having to clean the filter in the Shop Vac. Nearly all wood particles from my turning on a lathe that doesn't get collected by the dust collector ends up being vacuumed up with the Shop Vac. This meant checking to make sure the Shop Vac's filter was clean on a regular basis. After attaching the Dust Deputy, and monitoring its efficiency for nearly 2 weeks, I am 100% sold on using it. Most everything excepting polyresins (very light weight plastic shavings) are ending up in the 5 gallon pail. Extremely easy to take the cover off, empty into a garbage bag, and dispose of it. No more clogged filters that need washing, cleaning and/or replacing nearly as often...almost nothing in the Shop Vac! It is all in the dust deputy. I am getting one for the garage Shop Vac too, that is how impressive this add-on works for me and is saving me a lot of clean-up time.

Can't believe I waited so long to get it

Using the DD on my jointer, planer, tablesaw, bandsaw, router, and pretty much everything I can use it on. Works great. Vacuum suction is never lost because hardly anything gets to the filter on my shopvac. I need to build a cart to put both my shopvac and DD on. Without it, the DD has a tendency to tip over easily.

    Dust Deputy

Attached this to my 15 year old Craftsman ShopVac, using just the parts that were included, and everything fit great, including my existing hose. After attaching the Dust Deputy, my shop vac has more suction power than it did prior to the Dust Deputy addition even without replacing the old, clogged filter. I did change out my existing shop vac hose to 2 10' 2.5" clear dust collection hoses from Woodcraft so that the ShopVac/ Dust Deputy combination could stay in one spot rather than rolling it around. The only complaint is that with the Dust Deputy "free standing", if I pull too hard on the hose, the Dust Deputy falls over. This will be easily fixed by attaching it to the shopvac, but I haven't yet determined how I want to attach it.

    Save time & mokney

If you want to save money on vacuum filters, this is the best of all possible worlds. I easily went through 3-4 high efficiency HEPA filters a year at about $40 a pop. Since I put the Dust Deputy on line I can barely see any dust on the filter I put in a month ago despite the fact that I've been making crown molding and base cap for a new den plus fabricating deck beams for the restoration of a 10 meter Dragon class sailboat. Doing a little math makes this one a no-brainer.

Separates dust but, tipping is a problem

Tipping is caused by vacuum pressure between the shop vac and the Oneida. The port for most shop vacuums is well below the top port of the cyclone separator. Vacuum forces cause the hose connecting the Oneida to the vac to shrink along its length which pulls even a half full can over. Further, the supplied hose collapses a bit creating a bend radius that restricts air flow. Shop solutions are to raise the vacuum (my choice) or restrain the hose in some kind of channel. Another problem is caused by the shop vac market. With the Oneida it's not necessary to buy a vacuum with a large waste container – most of the material goes into the Oneida. However, the machines with the highest CFM also have the largest waste containers. You end up lugging around the 16 gallon shop vac and the Oneida. I have not owned the device long enough to determine if it extends the life of the shop vac filter.

    Good investment

Great product. Definitely performs as stated. Will keep the heavy and fine dust out of the vacuum filter. I use to connect my large Rigid shop vac directly to my power tools (don't have a dust collector), but after running a decent amount of MDF cuts, the filter would clog right up and lose suction. Installed this solution and now barely anything gets to the filter, which means full constant suction. Simple design to empty, detach and do the old dump and run with the 5-gallon bucket to avoid the blowback from your waste barrel - 60 seconds total. I was hesitant to spend [$] on this, but the time and effort I have saved from not having to constantly stop and bang out the vacuum filter 4 to 5 times a day is priceless. Really great idea...

    Works like it should but...

Works like it should, but afraid that it is not going to hold up. Flexes a lot during use, the base seems thin. For the [$] kit it should have more metal support than what it has. The hose included is very low end... don't expect it to hold up.

Best thing since bread was invented!

If you've fought clogged Shop Vac filters when working with something like MDF, this is the answer. I was amazed how little dust made it past this unit into the Shop Vac's filter. It will collect pounds of sawdust and the inside of the vacuum is barely dusty. I attach it to a dust bag under my contractor's table saw to pull the dust through, as well as using it for my biscuit cutter and sander. I also use it for general clean up after a project. This unit is a little lightweight, so either put a brick in the bottom to keep it from toppling, or fasten it to a piece of 3/4" stock. The instructions show it combined with the vac on a rolling cart which I might make someday. This thing WORKS.

    Oneida dust deputy

It allows you to use a hepa filter in your vac and avoid the filter becoming clogged and losing vacuum. I'm using it with a Fein vac and it took some searching to find an adapter to connect the 1.25 dia. hose to the deputy inlet. I used a rubber plumbing adapter. I was sceptical that a small scaled version of their cyclone would be so efficient. But now I'm a believer.

overall design and function is superb, for the price paid they could supply a better quality hose. mine was cracked on one of the connectors. soft rubber/gummy connecter ends would be better. this product does as they say...collects almost or just about 99% of the dust/particles. i can actually go to a smaller shop vac to save space.

This unit works very well. The only negative is moving it around in my shop. Oneida provides a system to attach the unit to the vacuum but it doesn't meet my needs. I will probably build a cart to hold the Dust Deputy directly above my vac so the actual footprint doesn't increase. In spite of this small complaint, I would recommend this product. dust collection

I am a Shop teacher and have a shop system at school but at home in my well tooled shop the dust collection is last priority unfortunately. This unit works well if you have the space to have this and a shop vac next to each other. Only a little of the fine dust gets past the cyclone. I have used it for sanding many projects and I have even used it to vac the floor with metal bits and hardware and it works fine. Just buy the DIY system, two 5 gal pals are not worth the extra.
