Nice Lathe With A Couple Issues

I bought the 70-100 about five years ago, but had not used it regularly until recently. I have it on a custom cabinet stand and built an 18” bed extension of hard maple. It runs smoothly and has all the features I need for turning smaller projects. Two issues with mine: the drive pulley set screw works loose and requires periodic tightening, and the banjo (tool rest base) was badly machined as received, so that the tool rest was 1/8” lower on one end than the other. Careful filing of one side of the banjo underside corrected this.

        Good lathe for the price

I bought this lathe to turn wooden rock climbing holds, primarily 5" and 6" hemispheres. The lathe works very well and has enough power to handle the beefy pieces of wood I have been turning.

        Not bad.

I had this setup and turning within minutes of unboxing. The instructions were pretty clear. I did a lot of research before buying and most reviews I read online are correct. The few cons I have run into are, this is under-powered for bowls over 6". the tool rest supplied is crap, mine had a slight curve to it. One major problem came about months later. Something on the shaft wore out. So it would slide in and out making the work chatter. (looking directly at the lathe, the shaft moved left to right) I contacted rikon, and they sent out a new shaft and a set of new bearings within about 2 weeks. I found a topic online, with a similar lathe that had the same problem on woodbarter.com. The guys there were very helpful. I had it fixed in an hour or two. and it's been fine ever since. (i do have to replace the belt now though, it's a little streched out.) I would have updated to the variable speed model had that one been in the same price range. But this one is not bad.

        Outstanding Lathe

This is my second lathe. My first lathe was a full size Craftsman. It was immediately apparent that this lathe was much better quality. Everything is extremely precise, easy to use, and consists of much more durable metal vs. plastic parts. I had this setup and turning in minutes of unboxing. The instructions were clear and "just enough". I did a lot of research before buying and most reviews I read are inline with what I experienced. This was definitely worth the money!

        Great Small Quality Lathe

Purchased this lathe to continue my love of pen making. It is very easy to use and setup. Is a quality product. Made the purchase at the Woodcraft Tri-county Store. The sales staff there are very friendly and helpful - especially Pat, the store manager.

        Very nice mini

the tool rest should be a little harder. parting tool mars the rest fairly easily. other than that this is a great tool.

        New rikon

Turn bowls and plates, pens. I was well surprised, the lathe has a 12 inch swing soooo I put a large deep bowl blank on just to see if it would do it and was presently surprised. We'll pleased with the purchase and will be using this for some time to come. Do not see any cons for it being a small lathe. Price was right and it is as advertised and much more. Do not hesitate, just buy it and be happy.

        I made the right choice

I was ready for my first lathe and after a month or so of looking, shopping and comparing, I chose the Rikon 70-100. It was easy to setup, it is nice and quiet and seems to have plenty of power. I'm new at this but I really like the lathe, it just feels right to me. Thanks to all the people at the Charlotte NC store for all your help and advice. ,

        Great Lathe! Great Price !

This lathe is really built like a tank !! I was turning within an hour of purchasing it ! It doesn't have the variable speed but I can easily live without that. Changing speeds is extremely easy !! Yes, it is the lower priced mini lathe compared to others but why pay more when you can get this little gem ? I would definitely buy Rikon again in the future !!!

        Great Lathe

Great lathe. The wife got it for me for Christmas. I was kind of leery at first, because I was looking at the Jet and Delta Midis. But, this lathe is great, I am not disappointed one bit. I have turned logs, blocks, everything I can find and it does not back down. It runs so smooth, I haven't even bolted it down yet.

        Nice Machine

I have turned for years on a clone lathe that you could not get attachments for. I upgraded to this and feel like I have been released from prison. I can use this for hours on end and not have a single issue with the machine. The only thing that would be better would be the variable speed model. But this one is VERY easy to change speeds with minimal down time. The little machine that could!!!

        Rikon Wonder Lathe

At first glance this lathe jumps out at you, it is meaty and mean. The cast iron bed makes for a smooth slide with the tool rest foot and the tail stock. I turned hundreds of calls without one single problem, The optional stand makes it possible to adjust height to meet your own personal needs. The index stop is ok, but could be increased to 16 instead of the 12. My lathe has over 2000 hours and still is like it was when I brought it home, a lot dirtier but just as powerful and dependable. Vibration is the least of my worries, as the cast iron bed and the stand together keeps this lathe steady as a rock. I have reccomended this lathe to many of my turning friends who have purchased their own with the same results and will continue to reccomend it to all turners, newbie or professional.

        Lasted two weeks

I bought this lathe on sale after shopping online. I read plenty of customer reviews. Just about everyone was happy with this lathe - pretty much bullet proof. Mine died out after a few weeks of a lot of use. Under advisement from people at Woodcraft, they said it is a very popular model and just about never have had complaints or problems. Again, I think mine was a fluke. It was determined to be something wrong with the motor. I traded up for the Jet midi lathe. I think anyone who buys this lathe will wind up being happy with it. As usual, Woodcraft was a great help and took it back. I agree with one reviewer - why no vacuum port?

        Smooth runner

After saying I would never own a lathe, I bought this one at woodcraft. Glad I did. I have made peppermills, bowls, mortar and pestle, and so on. It came with enough bells and whistles to get you well started. There are always things to buy extra once one buys a lathe. Very sturdy, well built, quiet. Should be around for a long time. Other ones are out there with variable speed, larger motors, beds etc. but this one for the price is great.

        not a bad lathe

I bought this lathe while the free stand promo was going on. It is not a bad lathe but I also have a jet 1014I and I do often compare the two. I feel the rikon is underpowered. When I got the lathe home and cleaned it up and got it ready for a bowl I noticed the tail stock does not stay in place, it will not lock down, even after adjusting the lock nut on the bottom. I also have the same problem with the tool rest banjo. I can get it really tight and a few vibrations from the lathe knock it loose. One time almost sending the rest into the piece of wood that was turning. I also feel the unit could have withstood at least a 3/4 hp motor. It seems that speed is thee but just no torque. I can easily stop the motor at any time or on even the softest of woods. It is not a total loss and like I said i do compare it to the jet that I have even though they are in two different price ranges.

        Good value for the money

Lathe seems to have adequate power and runs smoothly. Power switch could have a different location...I tend to turn off the machine during use when trying to turn a particular feature. I considered Jet and Grizzly before purchasing this brand.

        I love it!

I bought this lathe just to play around....but I have been in my shop every weekend since. I use it most for making pens but I am now about to start on a chess set. I have had not problems out of it. It has plenty of power and have not had a problem in the three months i have had it. The motor does get hot after a hour or so but anything that runs that long will. I only wish you didnt have to move the belt to change the speed but i knew that when i bought it. All in all I love it!!!!

RIKON Mini Lathe a good buy!

The lathe is sturdy and accurate with center to center right on. A little underpowered for a 12" platter but if you are not too aggressive in cuts, it is fine. I like the easy to change speed set-up and automatic tool release on tailstock. You cannot have a finished plate of 12" as the rough blank cannot be over 12", it would be nice if lathe had a 12 1/2" swing.

        "Great Product - Excelent Value"

This is my introduction to woodturning. The Ricon was reccomended by a friend that had used many other brands and felt this was the best for the money. I heartily agree! It is well made with little or no vibration. Alignment is perfect. I have used it for long periods of time and don't notice excessive heat from the motor. It comes with an 8" tool rest. For pens and smaller work you need the 4" or 6" rest.

Very Happy with our Rikon Mini Lathe

My 2 boys keep themselves busy over the weekends making all types of things [salt shakers, tops, plates, bowls, pens, pen holders] anything they can think of to turn. I'm really happy with its ability to handle what they "throw" at it, and with the results that they get.

Nice little mini with one flaw

I use this lathe for all my small work. Only one thing bothers me about this lathe...The motor get unusally hot !! After I contacted Rikon, they said it's "perfectly normal". It is true if you can afford a variable speed lathe, then don't skimp, but if changing speeds by adjusting the belts doesn't bother you, then this is the lathe for you. Most well designed mini out there..period!

        Very poor quality

Very poor quality. The tailstock ram lockdown stripped the first time I used it. The replacement was the wrong part. The live center squeeled until I lubed it. It still growls. The tailstock is off-center. The motor fan rattles.

        Decent Value

A little under powered and small for larger bowl turning. An 8" bowl is fine, much bigger and it strains. I have seen some vibration problems turning pens but some of that may be tooling. Mine does have some vibration problems turning pens even with sharp tools though. If you have the $$ I would recommend a variable speed. Mine has good tailstock to spindle alignment. Sturdy base. Overall though it's a good value for the $$ and works fine.
