This is a poorly designed product

Very frustrated. Zero way to correctly align the blad to square against the grinding stone. Have to adjust by trial and error and that adjustment is also very difficult, nearly impossible. The roller part can be longer so that it can provide more stable support on the grinding stone. The overall height is so high it can only be used for the plainer blade or longer chisels, but not for shorter ones.

    Goid tool

I used to have one of those $12 honing guides. It went promptly into the trashcan after the first use. Since then I’ve been honing my planes and chisels freehand, which gave me acceptable results. However only after buying this guide I realized how much I was missing. My tools never were as sharp. Some people complain that the angle jig is difficult to use. In my opinion nothing could be rasier. You ride the blade under the knob, raise it as much as it goes and tighten the holder screw. Ifyou still do not like it glue a piece of wood stop onto your honing station. One thing that you do need to have on hand is some kind of square to set the blade. Its a pity that Veritas discontinued this guide in favor of mk2 which consists of many (expensive) separate parts. This one is geniously simple and does the job well.

    Perfect

Finally I can get the exact edge I need. I deal in increments of .001 inch. The tool helps me do that.

Works great! Highly recommended. Can add a 1 or 2 degree bevel with a simple turn of a knob. Recommended!
