    Great Stepping Stone

I purchased these chisels as my first "nice" chisels. They feel good in the hand and the box they come is well suited to their shape. I did have to flatten the back of the 1" chisel for what felt like forever, 2-3 hours on 150grit sandpaper and then they needed the bevels cleaned up and polished. They are ground accurately to 25 degrees and I am considering giving them a 30-degree micro-bevel for added edge retention. I did have an issue with the 1/4" chisel, it was off to the left of center but that was an easy "fix" putting it in a doghole (I think that's what it's called on my bench I made) and applying gentle but consistent pressure. So far, overall happy with the purchase as the next step up in chisels for me.

Nice Set, but require lots of work

I bought these chisel based on the reviews that the steel was good and hard, also knowing that they may need some work. Needing some work was an understatement. It took upwards of 2.5 hours to get all these ready for use with a mechanical worksharp 3000 sharpener. The backs were no where near flat and spent the majority of the time just getting them flat. The bevels did not take long as I finished those on wet diamond stones and a leather strap. They hold and extremely sharp edge and tend to hold up with use. I would recommend these to anyone, but just be aware they do take some time to get them ready.

Good set once you finesse them

First of all, they come in a nice box for storage. They look good, and feel good in the hand. The steel, whatever it is, is very hard so they take a great edge and seem to hold it well. The big problem out of the box is they need a LOT of work to make them usable. The backs especially need quite a bit of flattening. They were all out by at least a few thousands along the entire length of the back and had a noticeable twist. The 1/4" one was especially bad. You will need a couple hours to get these ready for work. Good news is that once you put in the necessary time they cut as good as a $300 set and you only need to do the backs once. Maybe the edge won't hold up as well as the top-end chisels, but they don't cost top-end either. After doing the main bevel at 30 degrees and a micro bevel at 35 degrees I could get a glass smooth finish on pine endgrain with hardly any effort. Nothing to sneeze at there. After chopping a few dovetails in 1/2" cherry there was no burr on the edge of the bevel, and the 1/2" one I used still sliced paper like a razor. A good sign for the future. Bottom line, even at $89 they are a good buy, and when Woodcraft puts them on sale 20% off, a great buy.

    Great Looking.. workmanship not awesome

I received my chisels and right out of the box I noticed that the 1" and 1/2" beveled edges looked like that were milled on some sort of angle. the edge looked like it was 90" from the side, but the face of the bevel was angled. Also, on the 3/4", one corner looked like it had been dropped or hit on something. I have e-mailed customer service to see what they can do for me. I'm going to have to spend a great deal of time getting these to where I want them. I know that they are not "the best of the best" and some setting up and sharpening is to be expected, I knew this from the other reviews. I just didn't know it would be this bad.

    Nice first set

Love the chisels. Great set. Paid extra for the sharpening and they half arsed it. Not what I was expecting to see cutting into the wood. Really messed up my dovetails. Do a better job next time. When people pay extra for sharpening, they expect them to be ready for work out of the box. Other than that, theY look great, feel great and should have many years of use.

    Seems good so far.

So I have been using these for about 4-5 months now with no real complaints. A lot of people have been saying that it took them a long time to flatten but I don't think that to be the case. I was able to flatten all of them in about an hour just using sand paper and elbow grease. They hold a decent edge and work all day. My only complaint is that I wish I had gotten some butt chisels as I think they are more comfortable to hold, but that is just my own personal preference and not a knock to these chisels.

    Good steel BUT!!!!!!!

These chisels are made of very good steel BUT! along with that comes a great deal of work to get them useable for fine woodworwking. The 1/4" is the only one set up so far but that took a TON of work. I dont have a mechanical means of sharpening anad I spent 3 hours just getting the back flattened. Started with sandpaper and granite block then proceeded to my diamond stone. The bevel went much faster, but the condition of the 1/4" was horrendous. It looked to be mostly flat except where it matters most. They look to have been polished with a buffer and I think whomever did it tipped it and ground into the side too long. The enclosed picture is after 2 hours of working on it. I had to remove almost .015" across the whole back to get it flat.

    Overall a good value, but...

Overall, these chisels are a very good deal for the money. They hold edges very well, don't chip easily, and fit in the hand nicely. That being said, they require a significant amount of reworking before you can use them. The backs must be flattened before use - mine were waaaay out! (Woodcraft could do better here.) However, after spending about 20 minutes getting each up to speed, the set performs beautfully.

Very Good, But Needs Lots of Setup!

Let's start with the low hanging fruit - these are very nice chisels and a good price. That being said, mine ( and others here have noted as well) required lots of setting up - LOTS! The face is the worst part overall and requires lots of lapping to bring into flat. I use the Veritas Honing Guide which makes getting a good primary and secondary bevel doable within about 5 minutes the first time around. I then strop and admire the edge - very nice. The good news is once you've invested the required and somewhat frustrating upfront time, you end up with an awesome set of chisels that I am sure will provide many years of service.

    Great inexpensive set of chisels

Great first set, or general use chisels for someone. The steel holds and edge well, the handles feel great in the hand, and they have good ballance. The backs will need considerable flattening, because of the good steel it takes a good ammount of time. The biggest complaint I have with them is the bevels on the side are too broad for tight areas while dovetailing.

    Good General Purpose Set

I recently bought these chisels as a higher grade set than the motley assortment I have acquired over the years from yard sales, etc. I am a professed 'Neanderthal' (That's a 100% hand tool user), so a good set of bench chisels is essential for a lot of tasks I do. I found that these chisels, out of the box, were nowhere usably sharp, but that is to be expected of any new chisel. I use the 'scary sharp' sharpening method, so my criteria for sharp is the ability of a blade to shave arm hairs cleanly without pulling. My biggest gripe, er...concern with these chisels is that the backs are not machined flat. The larger sizes required quite some time with 60 grit sandpaper on glass to get the first inch of the blade back satisfactorily flat. After that, it was no problem to progress to a mirror finish and a terrifyingly sharp microbevel! I have found that these chisels hold an edge very well, even with considerable use. I particularly like the attractive bubinga handles that are shaped to not roll. Nothing scarier than having a scary-sharp edge heading toward one's foot! These chisels are a great addition to my tool chest! Great product, Woodcraft....

    Great Set of Chisels!

Right of the box was sharp. But me being me, I run each chisel across a strop to make them razor sharp! They have held there edge for quite some time now with only an occasional stropping. I have use these chisels for everything from trimming dovetails to hogging out Mortises. Highly recommended!

    good but needs work

These are good chisels, but they are difficult to get set up properly. I have the set of eight which includes the 1 1/4 and 1 1/2 inch size chisels. They came sharp out of the box, but were not flat and had large milling marks on the back. Once they got dull and needed to be sharpened I discovered why they were only around 80 dollars. The smaller ones (3/4 and below) were easy to sharpen and flatten, but everything larger took forever. Once they were flattened, ground and sharpened properly they work very well. These are a good starter set for some one just begining woodworking. There is a valuable lessen that is learned from having to flatten and sharpen them. In the long run I am glad I got this set, but I still love my Stanley sweatheart chisels the best.

    Well worth it

I have some Irwin marples and they work but this set is awesome. They stay sharp for an acceptable amount time. (for me at least) I got them when they were on sale and they are well worth the money. I've done dovetails with them and these things are a pleasure to use.

    A great saler

One of the most effective chisels that I have purchased in a long time. It has replaced my other set and I use them more than I did in the past with my older set. Thanks Woodcraft and I look forward to getting more excellent hand tools for my woodworking needs.

    Great Value!!

This was my first quality set of chisels. They are well balanced, and just need a good honing, prior to use. They really gave me the best bang for my buck.

    Great buy good set

I had these pre sharpened because I needed to use them as soon as they arrived. We they came I went straight to work on a dinning room table now it is complete. I had to chisel out bad inlay and replace with new. They worked great thanks.

What you get is not what you see

After receiving the set, I began to examine the tools. Well at first glance they look really nice. But after some detail inspecting, I noticed the buffing was too extreme, the bevels were not exact on both sides, the handle flat areas do not align properly and the grinding is poor all around. Yes, my observations are cosmetic but, I was expecting something resembling the picture and machined properly. My Stanley FatMax chisels, set of six, are machined much better than these and the cost less.
