Description: Time to bring out the big guns, er.....Ok chisels. In this class our instructor Steve will guide the students in the construction of a slab bench. The bench will measure 14"w x 44"long x 17" tall and all the pieces will be made from 2" thick European Beech lumber. Or if you've got that special slab of wood you been hanging on to, bring it to class and make your bench from it.

Project Class: The Shaker Hall Table with Jerry Bass

Class Size: 2 to 6
Description: This 3-day class utilizes a combination of hand tools and power tools in the construction of a classic Shaker Hall Table. The table measures 14" x 30", by 32" high. The class is intended for the beginner/intermediate woodworker who is interested in furniture making. With the instructors guidance each student will process rough lumber to a finished table. Various skills and techniques will be used in the construction of the table, including building and fitting a dovetail drawer, creating tapered legs, beaded aprons, mortise and tenon joinery and grain matching are a few the student learn while making the Shaker Hall Table. Time permitting finishing will be discussed. Class size is limited.

Description: Relief carving is the method used to raise a carved design on wood so that it stands above the background. Our instructor Saman will guide each student though a series of project-based exercises designed to build the student's confidence. Carving chisels come in a myriad of shapes and sizes and learning the proper way to sharpen and hone the basic chisel shapes will be emphasized. This hands-on course will give you the fundamentals you need to move on to Three-Dimensional Carving and Carving for Furniture.

Beginning Knife Making with Robb Gray

Description: We are very lucky to have professional knife maker and leatherworker Robb Gray as our knife making instructor here at Woodcraft. Robb's work can be seen at Filson's flagship store here in Seattle and on their website. His work can also be found in private collections around the world. A good knife is indispensable, in this class Robb will guide the student through the process of making them. Each student will be given a knife kit and a choice of knife scales. Robb will cover handle sizing, shaping, fastening, finishing and polishing. He will also discuss customizing kit blades to refine the blade shape and how to properly sharpen and maintain the blade. At the end of the class the student will walk out of class with a sharp quality knife that will last them a life time. If time permits Robb will discuss how to design and lay out a leather sheath, so you can make a sheath at home or in a future class.

Description: Anyone who has been to Mexico has seen these wildly painted carved animal figurines. In this introductory carving class Saman will teach the student how to carve and paint them for themselves. Once the carving is complete the real fun begins as your imagination is free to paint the figures as brightly and wildly as you like. Description: Every now and again we like to try something new. This time we thought we'd try a Comb carving class. Yes real combs that you can actually comb your hair or beard with. The combs will be made from 1/8" x 3" x 6" cherry wood blanks. The comb can be whatever shape the student would like. Each student will cut and shape the tines of the comb. Once the tines are complete the student will personalize the the comb by carving a relief carved design into the spine of the comb.

CNC Inlaid Cutting Boards with Kris Young

Tools Required: Students are required to have a basic knowledge of windows software and bring a laptop running a current version of windows to class.

Description: CNC machines are becoming an important part of woodworking. As the machines become more common and affordable they are finding their way into home woodworking shops. This class is for the absolute CNC novice. If you've seen the machines and are curious about their potential, then this is the class for you. Using Vectric's V-Carve Pro software, the student will develop a simple design for an inlaid, end grain cutting board. Once the design is complete, the student will be taken through the process of creating roughing and finishing tool cutting path files for the CNC machine to use. With the tool paths created the student will be shown how to set up and run the CNC machine to create their own unique inlaid cutting board.

Description: Learn the basics of casting with resins. Cast resins can be used for anything, from pen blanks to River Tables and everything in between. They can be entirely resin or combined with wood and other materials to make something new and unique for your woodworking projects. In this hands-on class, you'll learn the basics of resin types and their different uses, mold types, color, effects, casting with pressure and without, and the different materials that can be cast in with the resin.Each student will be given an opportunity to create several different castings during the class. Description: Relief carving is the method used to raise a carved design on wood so that it stands above the background. Our instructor Saman will guide each student though a series of project-based exercises designed to build the student's confidence. Carving chisels come in a myriad of shapes and sizes and learning the proper way to sharpen and hone the basic chisel shapes will be emphasized. This hands-on course will give you the fundamentals you need to move on to Three-Dimensional Carving and Carving for Furniture.

Water stones, diamond stones, ceramic stones, slow speed, and high-speed grinding, and sharpening on systems like Tormek are covered. The classes primary focus will be on sharpening bench chisels and hand plane blades. Other tools will also be discussed and demoed. This is a hands-on class that is sure to hone your sharpening skills, so be sure to bring your dull tools to practice on.

Beginning Knife Making with Robb Gray

Description: We are very lucky to have professional knife maker and leatherworker Robb Gray as our knife making instructor here at Woodcraft. Robb's work can be seen at Filson's flagship store here in Seattle and on their website. His work can also be found in private collections around the world. A good knife is indispensable, in this class Robb will guide the student through the process of making them. Each student will be given a knife kit and a choice of knife scales. Robb will cover handle sizing, shaping, fastening, finishing and polishing. He will also discuss customizing kit blades to refine the blade shape and how to properly sharpen and maintain the blade. At the end of the class the student will walk out of class with a sharp quality knife that will last them a life time. If time permits Robb will discuss how to design and lay out a leather sheath, so you can make a sheath at home or in a future class.

Description: Get started using the free Fusion 360 CAD program to design your projects in full 3D. Verify everything fits before making the first cut. Then print drawings, complete with dimensions and cut lists, for use in the shop. This class assumes no prior knowledge of CAD or Fusion 360. It guides you through an ordered sequence of demonstrations and exercises on your own PC to build skills in manageable steps, leading to the effective use of Fusion 360 for Woodworking.Students are required to bring a laptop with Fusion 360 pre-installed to class. The laptop (either a PC or MAC) will require a power adapter, and Mouse with Center Scroll Wheel.
