Description: Students will learn all about the A, B, C, and D's of wood turning - Building the Foundation! This will include lathe operations, safety, tool selection, sharpening, and basics of turning. Students will learn all about turning tools, the different styles and grinds, as well as how to choose and sharpen your tools. You learn what each turning tool is used for, and how and when each should be used for different types of projects and different types of woods. We will go over wood grain, density, moisture content, domestics vs. exotics, how to correctly prepare turning blanks, the various methods of mounting your work on the lathe, and much more. This class is required if you wish to take any of the more intermediate and advanced turning classes such as bowls, boxes, pepper mills, segmented turning, acrylic turning, etc. This is a hands-on class! Description: This is a basic instructional class directed at one of the most useful tools in the entire shop: the bandsaw! Students will learn basic bandsaw safety and operation including rip cutting, cross cutting, re-sawing, and compound cutting. Step by step, we will walk you through essential personal safety as well as care and control of the saw, bandsaw setup, anatomy, blade selection and proper installation, calibration, re-saw drift, and how to get the most out of this valuable tool. During the morning and afternoon sessions, as we discuss these important bandsaw fundamentals, we will put new skills to use with cross cutting, rip cutting, re-sawing, and a bonus mock-up project involving pattern work!

Class Size: 3 - 5
Description: Wood selection, layout, and stock preparation is key to any successful woodworking project. We will break it down for you in this interactive class. Students will have hands-on practical experience choosing the proper wood, allowing for expansion and contraction, calculating board footage, considering grain direction, and accounting for fundamental characteristics of both lumber and man-made materials such as MDF and plywood. Using a combination of hand and power tools, students will take a board from its rough form to material that is straight, flat, square, and ready for use. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of tools and machinery, to include the table saw, bandsaw, planer, jointer, drum sander, and hand planes. As part of this class, students will build their own straight-line table saw jig. Tuition includes all materials. This class is open to any and all students and skill levels. It is a recommended (but not required) companion to our fine furniture series, including Woodworking I, II, III, and IV, as well as our Hand Tool Mastery series.

Description: This is an energetic 3-day in-depth introduction to the world of woodworking! Students will learn fundamentals of building fine furniture with our resident custom furniture maker, Brian Hubel (www.brianhubel.com). Topics featured will be wood science, joinery, design, power and hand tools, sharpening, shop safety, and accuracy in construction. Each student will use these newly-acquired skills to build their very own side trestle table. The final finish will be up to the students. Students wishing to learn more about finishing are encouraged to enroll in our hands-on "Applied Finishing" class here in our Colorado Springs store. This class is a prerequisite for Woodworking II, III, and IV here in the Colorado Springs store. Class size for our Woodworking I, II, III, and IV classes is limited to a handful of students. We STRONGLY encourage you to confirm your spot as soon as possible, as classes fill up fast and are only scheduled a few times throughout the year! Build an Heirloom Keepsake Box with Adam Johnson

Tools Required: If you have them: Safety glasses, ruler or tape measure, notepad and pencil. Hearing protection is optional. If you do not already own these items, we have classroom sets for you to use.
Class Size: 3-6
Description: This 2-day class will explore the world of small box making with power tools. Small boxes can be very simple to extremely elegant, from a simple recipe caddy to an intricate heirloom treasury. In this class, you will learn how to make a beautiful box with internal compartments for tea or keepsakes or other accessories. Once you learn the fundamental techniques, you can make just about any style in any size for any purpose . Students will focus on joinery in this class, and learn how to fit a decorative lid, which will set upon the top of the box. Your instructor will provide a selection of beautiful woods from which you will choose for your in-class project. Species for each class will be subject to availability at the time of class. At the end of Day 2, each student will take home the beautiful box which they build in class! Time permitting, application of a finish will be discussed, but final finishing will be up to the student. Students wishing to learn about finishing in-depth should enroll in our Applied Finishing class, and bring their bare wood boxes to learn all about finishing and apply finish during that class.

Description: PREREQUISITE: This class is a next step upon completing our table saw fundamentals and bandsaw fundamentals classes, and is geared toward hands-on project making. PROJECT: Design and craft your own segmented charcuterie board! In this class, students will continue to build on their existing credentials with the table saw and bandsaw, applying safety procedures and proper techniques in their project's stock preparation. In addition, students will be introduced to the jointer, planer, and drum sander, as they prepare their project materials. There will be a variety of wood species to choose from in class, and each student will chose multiple species for color diversity, as well as the valuable experience of using multiple types of wood. Students will also learn glue and clamping theory as they assemble their charcuterie boards. Finally, food-grade finishes will be discussed, and (time permitting) a finish will be applied to beautify and protect their completed boards. Each student will take home a uniquely designed graphic charcuterie board!

Description: Students will learn all about the A, B, C, and D's of wood turning - Building the Foundation! This will include lathe operations, safety, tool selection, sharpening, and basics of turning. Students will learn all about turning tools, the different styles and grinds, as well as how to choose and sharpen your tools. You learn what each turning tool is used for, and how and when each should be used for different types of projects and different types of woods. We will go over wood grain, density, moisture content, domestics vs. exotics, how to correctly prepare turning blanks, the various methods of mounting your work on the lathe, and much more. This class is required if you wish to take any of the more intermediate and advanced turning classes such as bowls, boxes, pepper mills, segmented turning, acrylic turning, etc. This is a hands-on class! If you have them, bring your own tools to sharpen and use in the class. Keep you eye on the class schedule for additional great classes on a wide variety of turning projects and techniques!
