Usually only found in machine shops, the super flat face of the WoodRiver® Granite Surface Plate is ideal for leveling small plane beds, flattening waterstones and general sharpening duties. Simply soak a piece of wet/dry sandpaper in water and lay it down on the stone; the capillary action of the water adheres the paper to the stone, eliminating the need for spray adhesives or PSA sandpaper. When done, wipe clean with a paper towel.

Very nice
I just used mine to flatten the bottom of a el cheapo $30 Buck Bros. hand plane I bought 20 years ago that never worked. The bottom of the plane looks like a million bucks now and magnitudes flatter than any machined part I've ever run across in woodworking.

Flat as advertised and inexpensive!
I visited the local store with my machinist straight edge and feeler gauges and it was dead flat every axis I checked. The surface was very smooth like 5000 grit. Not sure what some dude was talking about it not being flat and smooth. I did see the bottom of the slab is not finished or flat, but it's the bottom duh! I almost didn't buy this because of some body's review on here.

Pretty damn flat!
I went to their local store in Leesburg and brought my machinist straight edge as well as my feeler gauges to test how flat it really is. I did this because somebody said it was not flat as advertised in these reviews, glad I didn't listen. However, I did see the rough side he was talking about... It was the bottom of the Granite hahaha, dummy. The actual treated surface is extremely flat and smooth. Just adding my two cents so others know. Took pics but this place doesn't have a place for pictures.

GRANITE SURFACE PLATE
Great sharpening tool. Flat and extremely smooth. I have it out all the time. Saves time. Use 2500 grit for final polish. Wet the granite and paper stays in place.

Good for the money
While certainly usably flat, it's nowhere near the advertised flatness, simply because of the surface texture. The peaks and valleys that make it very matte are larger than 0.0001". Mine also has a tiny fossil in it, which creates a tiny hole, big enough to feel if running a pencil over it. It's certainly good enough for use with sanding paper, but I wouldn't spray it with a 0.1 micron compound for ultimate lapping. The corners are dead square, which is a good thing. The sides are slightly off from the top, which is likely due to flattening the top without compensating the sides afterwards. But for the price, yes, it's excellent. Just don't expect a $300 surface plate and you'll be fine.

Wow! This is Awesome
I have saved some pretty gnarly looking blades with this stone. It is probably the best sharpening investment I have made ever. I use this with Scary Sharp method of sharpening large blades. Great value for the dollar invested.

Great Buy!
I bought this a couple months ago and just used it the other day to sharpen a kitchen knife and one of my chisels. By wetting some wet/dry sandpaper and laying it on the slab, I was able to get a very good edge on both items. I am a beginner so I do need much more practice, especially holding the blades at the correct angles but it still did an excellent job for a fraction of the price you would pay for sharpening stones. It is very heavy for the size but that is a benefit since it doesn't slide around while using it.

Polished the backs of all my chisels and honed a sharp edge to each. Using spray adhesive to hold the wet/dry sanding sheets in place was an easy and simple solution and worked like a charm. Now my chisels all have sharp edges. A great investment at a very reasonable price.

Granite Surface Plate
The first granite plate I ordered was received with a 3 inch along crack along one edge that penetrated more than half way through the thickness. I called WC customer Service and they immediately shipped out a replacement that was received in days and in perfect condition. Thank YOU

A really flat surface
The flattest surface you will ever have for sharpening plane irons, chisels and knives. Great surface to polish and deburr parts. Works great with wet/dry ultra fine grit sand paper. A must have surface to use to measure part with a indicator. The sale price made this an extremely great buy and value.

It's flat for sure
This makes a great little assembly table for very small pieces. Set it atop anything and you have a perfectly flat surface that glue won't stick to. Also, you can't get a flatter surface for sharpening chisels, jointer knives, or whatever. A Little water and some wet/dry sandpaper and away you go.

As a metal shop guy it just seems "wrong" on so many levels putting abrasives on a surface plate,,, but it sure does work great!!! I picked mine up on travel two years ago, and packed it home. Wife still doesn't understand [$] for a flat rock ;-)

Fantastic!
I got this surface plate on sale at my local Woodcraft. I used to use a big hunk of plate glass for lapping and sharpening, but this is much, much nicer. I got some stick-on (PSA) rubber feet and stuck them around the bottom to prevent it from sliding on my bench. I've used it for lapping and sharpening plane and chisel blades, and also for lapping the soles of planes. Most recently, I used it to lap the sole of my new Lie-Nielsen block plane dead flat, and I got a rusty old Stanley #3 at a garage sale and turned it into a first-class production plane (after quite a bit of lapping...) For coarse grit sandpaper, I spray on a VERY light coat of 3M 77 spray adhesive to the back of the sandpaper ONLY, wait a few minutes, then smooth it down. Sheets peel up fairly easily, and I remove adhesive residue with a razor blade followed by an acetone wipe. For wet/dray sandpaper (finer grits, up to 2000), I have a spray water bottle and I mist the surface lightly then smooth it down. Cleanup for water is just a wipe down with a paper towel. Man, I love this thing! Use it for all routine honing. Sits on the corner of my bench and gets plenty of use.

Love it. Who knew a flat slab of granite could put such a smile on someone's face? This thing is HEAVY! [...] The stone also comes with a factory/lab report, guaranteeing the flatness of the surface. Pretty cool.

Buy one
If you use metal planes, or sharpen chisels and plane blades, buy one along with a wide assortment of wet-or-dry sandpaper and 3m sharpening film. You don't need to glue the sandpaper, just drop some water on the stone, and the sandpaper will stay in place. I have hundreds of dollars worth of oil stones, and water stones that now mostly stay in their cases.

polished sharp edges
I used this surface plate up to 1500 grit paper to get a mirror bevel on chisels. Then I restored a old Stanley plane. Perfectly flat and polished. Picked it up on sale for [$] [...]. You can't beat that!

Great Quality, Very Heavy Duty
Picked this granite slab up on sale and it was well worth it! I didn't have time to use it until last night and it worked great. A little moisture on the stone will lock wet/dry sandpaper to the stone surface and make it very easy to use and cleans up in a flash. I lapped a new Stanley Bailey block plane and honed the blade in one setting and couldn't be happier with how well it held the paper. The weight of the stone is very heavy which helped keep it in place.

Sharping Surface Must Have
I used my table saw deck and abrasive sheets to do my initial sharpening and polishing of my chisels and plane irons. Glass plates are more expensive, chip, & broke. However, with this Granite Surface Plate it is unlikely I'll have those problems, and is an outstanding performer. I am also rebuilding my sharpening station top to incorporate the plate into it.

Best money you can spend on sharpening.
I absolutely love this stone. I use it WITHOUT any sandpaper to flatten my waterstones. Splash some water on the granite and then rub the already soaked waterstone on the surface. Works like magic on my 800, 1000, 4000, and 8000 grit stones. I would have to throw down some sandpaper to flatten my 220 grit stone though.

Simple but VERY effective
Understandably, one would wonder why anyone would get excited about a piece of rock. But if you've ever tried to get a plane sharp, but couldn't because your waterstone had bowled out, then you would understand. I settled on this over the very expensive diamond stones because of all the positive reviews. I figured, what the heck, it was on sale. When the box arrived, it truly did weigh 30 lbs, so it is quite substantial. It also came in a crate and a cardboard box so it was well protected. It also had a laminated certificate of flatness. Apparently, they test each one, give it a serial number, and then show you the individualized results. You have to like that! Here's my first experience with it. I taped a piece of sandpaper to it, and flattened my waterstone in under a minute. It also saved my Norton flattening stone from being tossed out because it was not flat out of the box. Suffice it to say that it turned my inexpensive plane into a high quality one. I should have invested in this a long time ago.

Solid and Flat
Having a flat reference in your shop is indispensable for a million tasks. But this surface plate really shines if you use the scary sharp sharpening system. I used this plate to flatten a lot of chisels and plane blades. A flat back is the first step to a truly sharp blade. I am quite pleased with my purchase.

Worthwhile investment
Would be more convenient if some type of item was available to contain/transport the stone due to the shear weight involved. I plan to build some type of box to do this for my shop. Else the stone could get broken or chipped if it is not set down carefully.

Should have purchased years ago
I own 30 years worth of sharpening systems; grinders, sharpening stones [traditional, diamond and Japanese], flat tempered glass and even a Tormak. This simple piece of granite has no equal when it comes to quickly flattening the backs of tools and plane bottoms. It's a bit small for a true shop reference, but it will suffice for checking rulers, plane iron edges and other small critical measuring devices. It weighs a lot and will require protection from hard blows and perhaps a permanent resting place by a shop sink. Additonally, you will go through some wet/dry paper using this system, but only during initial flattening. The price (on sale at Woodcraft with free shipping)is awesome. The product comes in its own wooden crate packed inside a well protected cardboard box. Wish I found this years ago!

Accurate and true
The "Granite Surface Plate" is a must if you want to true a plne base or even sharpen a plane blade, just aply some spray adheasive on whatever grit sand paper or emery paper or oxide paper and let it dry to ware it dont shine any more than aply it to your Granite Surface Plate and go. I used it to true up my cheep Skill tabletop bandsaw table, it also polished it nice and smooth.

Flat and Cheap
I bought this granite surface place to replace a glass surface plate that was not flat. Aside from actually being flat, it is much more substantial than glass, does not slide on my bench during use, and being two inches thick it is much easier to let the tool hang off the edge (e.g. when flattening the back of a chisel). I will use it to flatten the sole of an old plane, flatten my water stones, and for some scary sharpening. I got mine on sale and with free shipping which makes this one of my smartest and most economical purchases.

heavy and flat
This is much better than a glass plate for flattening plane irons and water stones. The plate is much flatter than anything a woodworker is likely to have on hand, but reasonable priced. It is extremely heavy! Use care in moving it. I'm looking now for a place to keep it where it can be used and not moved.
