The No. 5 is commonly referred to as a Jack Plane, possibly derived from “jack-of-all-trades,” a person who is skilled at several trades. The Jack Plane is among the most versatile planes, offering more weight and more stability with its greater width and length. The No. 5 is an excellent smoother and can be used for jointing tasks. We know one old English gentleman who thinks so highly of the No. 5’s versatility that he won’t use anything else.

Clifton Bench Planes are made in Sheffield, UK, from the finest materials. The frog and frog seating in the body of these planes are based on the Bedrock design, meaning the seating pad in the body is full face, fully machined to mate with an equivalent full face, with a fully machined underside of the frog. This ensures absolute stability of the frog, providing a firm and solid base for the cutting iron. The Bedrock design is probably the most rigid and effective clamping mechanism of any bench plane available.
