After our Woodcraft Magazine blog on the Wheelchair Woodworking Shop, we were contacted by Carl Smith, a disabled woodworker who uploaded his handmade workbench photo to our Woodcraft Facebook page. The bench has a built-in grate area to catch the shavings from his Jet lathe with bed extension. After some commentary back and forth, and a phone call or two, we were fortunate to learn about Carl and his story.

    Surprise Surprise

I was skeptical when I purchased this sharpening system, but I needed my lathe tools sharpened. I was very surprised by how easy this system was to set up and how accurately it sharpened by knives. I could see the difference the first time I used my sharpened knives. This system is well worth the money and it has probably already paid for itself in saving me the cost of paying someone to sharpen my lathe tools. Thank you Wolverine for making such a simple and effective system to sharpen tools.

Works well with Rikon 8" - but needs shim

I am using the Wolverine grinding jug on my Rikon 8” slow-speed grinder that I bought from Woodcraft. The jig needs to be shimmed up off the grinder stand to allow the two Wolverine “bases” to fit under the grinder wheels. I used a ¾” ply shim glued to an additional ¼” extension piece that extends sideways enough to allow mounting of the “bases” – which hold the platform and V-arm in place. I added an additional ¾” piece under these ¼” ply extensions to give the base-mounting screws more purchase. This worked well, but required some modifications: First, the bolts that hold the grinder to the stand’s baseplate will need to be replaced with longer ones. PLEASE NOTE: the supplied bolts look for all the world like 3/8-16 size, but they’re not: They’re metric M10-1.5 thread. The supplied bolts are 6.5 cm long, and the ones I used were 8 cm. That length bolt will not fit between grinder and base to drop down through the stand’s baseplate – you’ll have to insert them up from below and tighten the nut down on the grinder base from above. That being said, the Wolverine jig works well, and the instructional DVD is well done and useful. I’d definitely buy it again.

    Finally, sharp tools

Sharpening has always been a weak point for me, until now. This jig has completely changed my wood turning results for the better. It has made it more fun too. This jig is worth every penny, and then some. Nice work, OneWay.

    Easy, solid, and well made

This is a very solid, well made jig. Slide it out, place your gouge in the rest, lock it in. Locking the arms in place couldn't be easier - just pull the leaver - no screws to mess around with. The large, solid, flat tool rest will be taking the place of the small rests included with the Rikkon grinder.

    Exceptionally heavy construction

Installation was a bear but not because of the wolverine system but my grinder. Never sharpened lathe tools before. Sharpened them. Using the marker trick demoed on the DVD tried them to see if they were actually sharp. Yes they were very sharp and made me a happy camper.

    Sharp tolls for turning

Once I set it up by the easy instructions. I followed the shapening and sharpening tips on the dvd and the tools never cut better. I can resharpen a tool in just secounds, I don't even have to stop turning but only a few secounds, and I'm back at it. Bowl turning has never been so much fun.

Even a caveman can do it!

Best jig available for sharpening chisels - especially woodturning chisels. Simple to use and set up. A bit costly - you can make one yourself for little or no cost. However, this one will last and last, with no slippage or guesswork.

    Well built

Good quality construction. The tool is apparently designed for an 8" grinder as it has a tendency to catch and kick back when using it on a 6" wheel. This is due to having to bring the cutting edge down low on the wheel to get the correct bevel. The platform jig works great for scrapers, etc.

    Woodturning Tool Sharpening That Works

I purchased this jig along with the vari-grind ( NOT THE VARI-GRIND 2 WHICH IS A PAIN TO USE ). I use it to sharpen all my woodturning tools. As for the vari grind, do not even think about grinding bowl and spindle gouges to fingernail, Elsworth or Celtic or whatever you want to call it with out this jig. These jigs are a must have unless you are that rare person with perfect hand and eye control every time.

    A Great Sysytem

I use this jig for sharpening all of my woodturning tools. The platform is great for Scapers and my Spindle Roughing Gouge. The size of the platform is adequate but in a few instances I could wish for a larger one. It is very easy to adjust. The V arm will slide into either side as will the platform so if you have a preference you have an option. Most grinders will require a spacer (3/4" plywood)under it in order to achieve the clearance for the slides, unless you have a 6" grinder. That isn't a problem though. The most important thing is to make sure the wheels are lined up directly over the center of the slide. This keeps you grinding in the center of the wheel.

How do you true the alignment?

A system designed to outlast three or four generations of woodworkers, BUT... It is sorely lacking in installation instructions. There must be a practical way to set up the alignment with the grinding wheels. Maybe a template of the Wolverine's footprint, adjustable to major grinder manufacturers. I'm just saying...

    Very Nice Tool!

This is a great and necessary addition to any shop with a wood lathe. The included attachment does a very professional job on gouges and parting tools while the also included "platform jig" allows you to grind bowel scrapers and skew chisels. It does seem a bit pricey but it is a very good quality tool.

This product is well made and was easy to setup. As a beginner to turning this jig makes sharpening my turning tools quick and easy. Experienced turners make most things look much easier than they really are but this jig really is as easy to use as it looks. It is a must have for any turner.

    light weight to round wheels

I bought this along with the grinding system. I was dissapointed in using the dresser. I tried to round the wheels on my grinder with very little success. I spent hours and noticed the diamend was the only thing that showed material loss. I took light passes but vibration of the grinder i think might have been the problem. I have changed the wheels and dressing with this tool does a very good job but do not try to round wheels that are severely out of round.

Wolverine Grinding Jig - Hype or Fact

After familiarization, it was easy to use and setup instructions very sufficient. Strong construction. Sharpens lathe tools great as advertised. the written sparpening instructions were lacking. the included video instruction was corrupt and I had to watch then via internet which was very time consuming as downloading was involved. The flat platform could be shaped a bit different as some lathe tools were hard to sharpen when moving from left side of platform to right side of platform. a sort of kidney bean shpaed platform would be better shape instead of off center rectangular shape. the suggested shape should be centered to grinding wheel.

From Bench Grinding to Sharpening System

This is a great "Add On" to your bench grinder This tool is designed for a Bench Grinder in General; so this means that you can use a 6in or 8 inch wheel and also works with a High Speed Grinder (like mine) or the Low / Variable Speed type I will recommend changing the Grinding wheels tor one to a 120 grit so your tools can last longer after the several Sharpening I use the basic Wolverine System (Slide Arm and platform) plus the Vari Jig Whit great results. I sharp less and turn More.....
