The Red Mallee (Eucalyptus socialis) is prized for its vibrant color. Heartwood ranges from pink to orangish red and pale yellow sapwood that is sharply demarcated from the heartwood. Mallee trees are scrubland vegetation that are common in many parts of Australia and has dozens of varieties. The trees are prolific producers of burl growths that can be harvested without cutting down the tree, which is why you normally see burls in cap form. Common uses include turned objects, knife and gun grips, and small specialty objects.
